You probably know of the huge recall of drop-side cribs in November 2009, but there have been several additional recalls since then, the latest in July 2010. There are safety concerns with the design of these cribs as hardware failure can create a gap between the crib and the crib mattress, posing a risk of suffocation.
I mentioned in an earlier post how important the decision of which crib mattress to buy is for the safety of your baby. Obviously, the choice of crib is another key decision. If you are in the market for a baby crib, please keep in mind that this type of crib is being recalled in hugh numbers, that it is banned in some states and that some countries are working towards a complete ban when you make your choice.
If you are buying a new crib, get one with stationary sides. If you are concerned about not being able to reach in to pick up your baby, you can get cribs with a lower rail on one side.
Buying a used drop-side crib is definitely not recommened as the hardware may be worn or damaged, posing a risk to your child.
If you already own one of these cribs, check the CPSC website to see if it has been recalled. Get a repair kit or exchange the crib if it is under recall. Visit cribrecallcenter.com for more information.
Even if it is not under recall, check the hardware to make sure it is complete, installed and working correctly, there are no loose screws and no sign of wear.
